Summer Survival Guide for Dog Owners

#

Summer is a season of sunshine, fun, and outdoor adventures—but for dog owners, it also comes with the responsibility of keeping pets safe in the heat. Dogs are especially vulnerable to high temperatures, and without proper care, they can quickly suffer from heat exhaustion or worse. Here’s your go-to guide for ensuring your dog stays happy, healthy, and cool all summer long.

Hydration is Key
Just like humans, dogs need plenty of water—especially during hot weather. Always provide fresh, cool water whether you’re at home, on a walk, or taking a road trip. Consider carrying a portable water bowl or a dog-friendly water bottle when you’re out and about.

Avoid Midday Heat
The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. During these hours, it’s best to limit outdoor activities and stick to shady spots. Walks are safest in the early morning or later in the evening when the pavement has cooled. Hot surfaces can burn your dog’s paws, so try the “five-second rule”—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog.

Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car
Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can rise dangerously fast. Within minutes, your dog could suffer from heatstroke. If you can’t bring your dog inside with you, it’s best to leave them safely at home.

Keep Them Cool at Home
Make sure your dog has access to a cool, shaded area at all times. Fans, cooling mats, and even kiddie pools can provide welcome relief on hot days. Indoors, keep air conditioning or fans running when possible, and consider trimming your dog’s coat (if appropriate for the breed) to help with cooling.

Watch for Signs of Heat Stress
Know the symptoms of overheating: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or uncoordinated movements. If your dog shows any of these signs, move them to a cooler area, offer water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Make Summer Fun—and Safe
Summer can still be a blast for your dog with the right precautions. Plan water-friendly activities like sprinkler play or dog beach visits, and always prioritize their comfort. With a bit of extra care, your furry friend can enjoy all the joys of summer right by your side.

Stay safe, stay cool, and have a paw-some summer!
