New Year, New Eats
As 2023 approaches, people make common resolutions to eat better and save money. Resolutions are easier to keep when you make them with a buddy. Your best friend pup can be a great partner to help you with your New Year’s resolution! How about starting yours with making homemade dog treats? This is not only a treat to your pup but also to yourself. They’re cheaper, healthier, and more creative! And besides your resolutions, homemade dog treats are a simple way to show your dog some extra love.
We at Doggy Detail always appreciate giving extra love to your pets. That’s why our wide-ranging services take care of all your pet’s needs, so you don’t have to worry. We offer waste removal (even during the winter) and sanitizing services. And, of course, we dog walk, dog & cat sit, and visit for dog & puppy playtime. The next time you’re away – whether work or play – Doggy Detail has you covered! Just let us know where you keep your homemade dog treats.
Now skip the store, and preheat your oven. Let’s bake some dog treats!
A Peanut Butter Treat
To start off with an easier, no-bake recipe idea with all ingredients on hand. You’ll need 1 ¼ cup of old-fashioned oats, ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt, and ½ cup of organic natural peanut butter. To really jazz it up, you can add 2 ripe bananas. Simply, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl until you have a dough-like consistency. Roll into small balls, place each peanut butter ball onto parchment paper, then pop them in the fridge for one hour. You’re all set! Plus, these ingredients are healthy and nutritious for your friend. Peanut butter, the star of this snack, is a convenient and delicious treat for your friend. It’s packed full of protein, vitamins, and fiber. As you know, your pet will love these, and you may too, as they’re human-friendly.
Just be sure not to use peanut butter with xylitol – that is toxic to pets.
Pumpkin Carrot Dog Biscuits
This one is a little more involved. Maybe for those who have made homemade dog treats before. You’ll need one cup of whole wheat flour, ½ cup of rolled oats, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg, 1/3 cup canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling), 1/3 cup grated carrots, 2 tablespoons olive oil, and 2 tablespoons water. Preheat your oven to 350˚F and mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl before adding in the wet ingredients. Stir until everything is well combined into a dough-like consistency before rolling out onto a lightly floured surface. Cut shapes out with cookie cutters – might we suggest dog bone-shaped – or just make small balls for bite-sized treats. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool before serving!
Yogurt & Blueberry Treats
These yogurt & blueberry treats are perfect! All you need is ¾ cup plain Greek yogurt, ½ teaspoon honey, 1 ½ cups whole wheat flour, and ½ cup fresh or frozen blueberries (if using frozen berries, make sure they’re thawed). Preheat your oven to 350˚F while mixing together the yogurt and honey in one bowl and all other dry ingredients in another bowl before combining them together into a dough-like consistency. Roll out onto parchment paper lined baking sheets, then cut shapes out with cookie cutters. Then press some blueberries into each treat. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool before serving!
Apple Cinnamon Dog Treats
Your pup will love this tasty treat! Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F then combine 1 cup oat flour, ⅓ cup applesauce, 2 tablespoons honey, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a medium bowl. Knead the dough onto a lightly floured surface then roll out into ¼ inch thickness and use cookie cutters. Place on an ungreased baking sheet and bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown. And of course, wait for these treats to cool before asking your pup to sit.
